Engine stand for Aerovee assembly

Hi all,

What did you use for an engine stand? Two or four arm? Bench mount or on wheels? Harbor freight or anything else? I saw in an old post the Mike recommends CB Performance or Aircooled.net.

The primary disadvantage I see of the 4 arm is you would have to assemble the case before you mounted it up to the stand. Is this right?

We just use a couple of 4x4 blocks about 14 inches long (give or take) to set the case(s) on and do it on the bench top.

I believe the one I got was from Great Plains. It mounts to your work table. Being
able to rotate the engine during assembly is very handy. It uses a two bold mounting
to the engine.

The brand is EMPI, I believe this is the same one GP sells but you can easily find these online on eBay or one of the VW sites.
Just google EMPI engine stand.

If I get a 2 arm VW stand, will it still work once the accessory plate is on? Are those holes the same as the case holes?

I ended up buying a 4 arm HF stand. I'll use it for the Saturn rebuild later. The bolts used to join the accessory plate to the flywheel are 10mm X 1.5. Bought some from the hardware store to mount my case. Question: the helicoils in the bottom of the case seem tight and also look red. I assume this is just threadlock stuff in there and I should send those bolts home - is that right?

I had to modify my HF mount to pick up all 4 holes in the case. You can see I drilled extra holes in the top two arms.

I bought 100mm long 10mm X 1.5 bolts plus nuts and washers. I made spacers for the stand tubes to bear on. Plus by using a nut the bolt length is not critical for the blind holes.

I used that same HF stand, but didn't bother with the 2nd pair of arms. I just used the top two and that was enough.

I implemented a few mods:
1) rivet the grip of the handle onto the tube.
2) a 1/4" PVC spacer to keep the locking pin holes aligned
3) a rubber band to retain the locking pin
4) a cleco to retain the handle
5) grease the pivot for rotating the engine

I need to replace that front caster - it is junk. Must have square balls in the swivel bearing.

I have one identical. After building the engine for my Starlet on it I bolted a piece of 3x2 on one end, a 2' thick piece of particle board attached to those 4 lugs I had an engine stand to maneuver the engine to the front of the plane for fitting. I also modified it again with a long piece of 2" unistrut and some more wheels etc for a wing stand.
