I'm using the Valvoline VR1 20w-50 non synthetic called for in the Aerovee manual. Not too expensive by the case on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Valvoline-822347- ... VR1+20w-50

About $6 a quart.

I too am using Valvolene VR1 20w50 Racing oil. The Aerovee manual specifies the approved oils. You have to have oil that has a high zinc content. Like Ryan, I get mine by the case from Amazon.

I've been using the Brad Penn Penn-Grade 1 Racing 20w50.
My local VW guy swears by this one.

The Valvoline VR-1 20w50 does not appear to be available in Australia.

For the last 20 years I've been using Castrol GTX 20-50 in my VWs. Haven't had an engine grenade on me yet. I'd go with whatever they recommend for the Aerovee.

Some people swear by synthetic and blends. Most of the guys I've talked to that have used them in VWs have had weeping issues (leaks) because the molecules are supposedly smaller and the tolerances on VW engines aren't as refined as modern engines. Another reason I use conventional oil is the frequency at which I change my oil. Usually 1500-3000 miles. Up until recently, I never ran a filter, only the screen. I reasoned that even expensive synthetic will recirculate the junk that gets by the screen and would be a waste of money as a result.

I don't have a VW, but I would thought I would drag the Jabiru people into this thread.

Aeroshell 100W + Camguard

Ed Kollins (the dude who made Camguard, designed or whatever) hangs out on the Cessna list. Between him and way many seminars from Mike Busch, Camguard makes a lot of sense paired to a simple oil. No idea if it has any relevance from a VW angle.

Gentlemen, start your flamethrowers.

I use Valvoline VR-1 20w50 but buy it from a local distributor in Portland, OR. Cost is $4.81 per quart- find a local distributor and they will most likely sell direct to you.

I use Valvoline VR-1 20w50 as recommended in the Aerovee manual. I buy it from my local auto parts store.
