CB heads vs Mofoco heads

Postby Brett » Wed Oct 01, 2014 11:23 pm

I was just wondering what people's experiences are of the new Mofoco heads so far. I have just received my new aerovee kit and these heads were in there. The aerovee I currently fly has the older style heads and I was comparing them side by side. The new heads have a heap more cooling fins on the back side just at first glance. Short story is I just did a leak down check as part of the service schedule on my engine and 2 exhaust valves were leaking. So just throwing up whether to buy the new style heads or repair the old ones.

I believe the Mofoco heads are ok these days.
I have Mofoco’s on my VW, Scott Casler’s been using the Mofoco’s forever on his Hummel engines.

If I recall correctly (from the VW forums) Mofoco had some quality issues a number of years ago when they were changing casting vendors.
A lot of unhappy VW customers at the time. That has apparently been resolved now.

CB’s are probably known to be the better quality but as I understand CB has been blacklisting people using their products for aviation use.
Here’s a thread on the subject http://vwaircraftengines.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=311
Not sure if that has anything to do with this change in supplier in case of the AeroVee.
