shielded strobe wire connectors

Postby sport65 » Sun Sep 07, 2014 10:24 pm

I put my wings on for rigging the other day and it made me start thinking about wiring the nav/strobe lights.
The led strobe lights have shielded wiring. I want to install a quick connect plug at the wing root, to facilitate wing removal. What type of connector do you have to use for this with the shielding? I was told by a friend to use a normal connector and connect the shielding into the connector as a wire would be. I guess this leaves the plug connector unshielded. Does this sound correct? or is there another way?

Thanks Jeff

Jeff,
That sounds correct. If you had MIL 38999 connectors you might terminate the shield to the backshell and preserve the shielding through the connectors. Just stay away from aircraft carriers. Seriously, if you make reasonable effort to minimize the unshielded length you will be fine. I have worked with shielded wire in my aerospace career for a long time.

Thanks Bryan ! Not familiar with MIL 38999 connectors but I assume they are metal cased. I'll look for something like that, but it's good to know normal connectors work and how to do it correctly.
Thanks allot!!

I used Molex connectors that I got from Radio Shack. They are white plastic with multiple pins.

Molex connectors will work good for that. I was only kidding about using 38999 connectors. They are expensive. Good option if you have a Blackhawk or F16. With LED strobes you will not have a lot of current. Keeping the unshielded part short through a molex connector would work fine. Don't hunt for a metal connector.
