The overvoltage protection kit is added into your electrical system and compliments the voltage regulator. These OV modules(
https://bandc.com/product/pm-ov-filter- ... kit-14v-2/) can be used with PM alternators or wound field alternators. The primary benefit of the OV kit is that it sits in the background and constantly monitors the bus voltage. If the bus voltage rises above the set point the OV module automatically triggers a response to disconnect the alternator from the electrical system. This prevents a runaway alternator or bad voltage regulator from damaging sensitive avionics due to excessive voltage.
The OV modules are not expensive, easy to install, require no pilot interaction to operate, and offer another layer of protection for your plane. I think they are well worth the expense and effort to install.
Another option is to replace the existing (stock) voltage regulator with the new ACV-1 voltage regulator from B&C specialty (
https://bandc.com/product/avc1-advanced ... lation-kit). This unit is super-high quality and includes an OV module as part of the regulator. They're about $250 but will last the lifetime of the plane, and will never burn up and leave you stranded somewhere away from home.
