Vertical Stab Aft Spar

There are 8 AN3-6A bolts that secure the aft spar strap to the lower spar channel. The plans say to use 2 washers per but the bolts appear too long. ..at least 1 washer thickness too long when the nut is tightened all the way...allowing the bolts to spin. Easy enough to fix but it doesn't make sense that the plans would show bolts that are too long. I am wondering if there is something else added later. I only have the tail plans.

I had the same problem with the A model plans. I substituted shorter bolts rather than additional washers.

I found Sonex tends to err on the long side for their hardware callouts. Not always but often.

I believe you should treat ALL of their hardware callouts as references, unless you're OK with adding 3lbs of washers to your plane.

Make notes on your plans for the next guy.

I've assemble my vert stab and noticed that the forward spar makes an angle of 57 degrees relative to the aft spar. This is a function of the pilot holes, rib length, etc in all of the components...it is what it is. The plans call for the forward spar fitting to be bent at an angle of 35 degrees...that means the larger flange part of the fitting is NOT parallel with the rear spar...it pitches back toward the rear spar 2 deg determined by math and measurement (35 + 57 = 92...not 90). My bent fitting is right on 35. Does this sound correct? I only have the tail plans and don't how this may or may not affect attachment in the future. Hope to order the rest this week w the sale. Please advise...
