Jabaru 2200

Postby Onex107 » Sun Sep 03, 2023 10:04 am

I have a hangar friend who is considering installing a Jab 2200. He is asking if anyone has an engine mount for sale or has anyone ever modified a VW mount to take the 2200? He has an engine from another damaged plane but he also needs a prop. Would appreciate any info on the problem.

Replacing a VW (AeroVee) engine with a Jabiru 2200 does have weight and balance implications because the Jab is lighter than the AeroVee, and therefore the engine needs to move forward with a corresponding longer engine mount and cowl. I found it easier to have a new mount built rather than modifying the old mount. Jabiru sell the forward 300mm top and bottom nose cowls which can be mated with the rear half of the AeroVee cowls, which allows the ram air cooling ducts to line up. Overall quite a big job. I use a Prince P-Tip prop.

Were you able to find someone that can build a new engine mount for a Jab 2200 on a Onex.. I looked long and hard at replacing my AroVee with a Jab 2200 or 3300 but could not find a source to build a mount.

No luck with the 2200 engine mount yet. Thanks for the reply.

My engine mount for the Jabiru was built by my LAME (Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer in Australia), not sure what the US equivalent is. His clever technique was to build a simple wooden framework from which he hung the engine and welded the steel tubes, after doing all the tube length calculations etc based on the new weight and balance requirements. I have attached one pic but I do have a series of pics and description which I am happy to send you if you drop me an email (johnhiggs199@gmail.com).

The Jab Gen-4 2200 would have been my engine of choice had I built a Onex. Since the Gen-4’s have come out, there is a marked decrease on the net in complaints, which bodes well. Pity it took Jabiru 30 odd years to get the issues sorted out, with the new heads being screwed to the barrels.
I ended up buying a Onex which came with an AeroVee. Having had some previous experience with both flying behind an VW and building a Formula Vee, will persevere with the AeroVee for now. Previous builder did a cracking job on this Onex and had set his up in a logical manner as per the build manual, but nevertheless I will be stripping down the AeroVee and doing some basic “mods” to sort it out further, especially in getting the bottom end balanced up properly. It is at the moment, a perfectly usable little engine but there are areas where you can focus on to give a little more HP, especially cooling, valve lift, exhaust, etc, which should give a more usable engine.
It would be interesting to hear what the performance figures are like with the Jab 2200 and how they compare with the AeroVee?
