I built my spars using the hammer and bolt method without any difficulty. In fact, with the right mind set, it was relaxing work, enjoying people visiting and sharing my experience with them. It opened the eyes of many!

If you do want to go the C-Frame way, our EAA Chapter has a virtually new one they'd let go for a reasonable donation. PM me for more info if you like.

I built the spars for the Onex. I bought two office desks from a local surplus store for $35 a piece. Very heavy. I set my floor mounted drill press between them and could slide the spars back and forth to drill and rivet. I borrowed a gun from an EAA friend and upset the tails. The desks made excellent work benches covered with chip board from the shipping pallet, complete w/ drawers, and when I finished I donated them back to the surplus store. All completed in my half of a two car garage. My wife's car never moved. The chip board and 2 X 4's from the shipping pallet made nice shelves to store parts on. The Onex spar has the added need to drill and ream the folded wing joint. Best done on a drill press.

The two worktables (desks) idea with the drill press in between is an awesome idea!!!

I logged about 50 hours (not including fabrication of the bolt-on angle pieces, which aren't included in the pre-built spars iirc) over 2 weeks to layout, drill, deburr, dimple, bolt and rivet my main spars. It was one of the most satisfying milestones for me during the project. I would definitely build them again.

I used the hammer/bolt method for most of the rivets, you'll need a powerful rivet gun or squeezer otherwise (they are relatively large diameter rivets compared to the rest of the plane). I did most of my left spar in 1 long weekend (2nd spar took a lot less time than the first one) and actually made a time-lapse video of it:

I had the angle kit and made my own spars. The problems with the spars is that a 3x rivet gun is a bit weak, and normal clecos are too small. Nevertheless, everyone seem to get them done somehow, without too much trouble. There are three spars on the Onex. This means they are relatively short. If I were to do it again, I would build them again also, but I would seriously consider getting a stronger gun. I would also arrange things so I could use my bench drill instead of hand drill.
