Pre-assembled Main Spar

Postby Mike53 » Tue Nov 01, 2011 6:59 pm

That option is listed at $2250 .My question is for those who have built their main spars themselves.Do you feel $2250 is a fair price for the work involved ? It just seems a bit much, or am I missing something?
All the machined parts for the rest of the Onex can be had for this same price .When I view the picture of all the machined parts this seems fair.I'm just having trouble with the Spar at this price. Is there as much work machining and riveting the Spar as there is to make all the rest of the machined parts?
Yes I may have a little Scotch in my ancestry :|
PS I should mention that I am about to order the rest of the kits for the Onex as 1 shipment, instead of 1 kit at a time.To big a savings when you order everything at once.

There's a bit of work involved but IMO not worth the money . Kits are pretty pre fabricated nowadays . We need to build something ! I do think that the machined parts option is worth the money .

I'm planning to buy the prebuilt spars. I'm trying to get flying as quickly as possible, and I'm willing to trade some money for time. Also, while I'm sure I could do the spars, if the factory does them I'll have more confidence when flinging the plane into high-g maneuvers.

We just went through this decision for Sonex 1517 - purely my very uneducated opinion, but after looking at what others went through building the spars, and listening to their advice, we bought the pre made spars.

When they arrived I was happy we did - yes, they are costly - but wow are they perfect!

I'm getting there myself. I'm not sure I will ever do much aero in my Sonex, but I do want the option to do so confidently. ;)

Everyone who has bought them seems to make similar comments. At least if you pay the $2200 you get a nice looking product.

There are a lot of critical assemblies to build besides the spar . If you don't trust yourself to do the spar right maybe you shouldn't be building a plane ;)
