I've come to this pretty late but it might be relevant for other things.
As a side issue, I always wondered what heating and cooling aluminum does, if anything, to its strength...


The answer is, cooling - no problem, heating - plenty, but it depends on the temperature and time at temperature. 6061T6 is made by "artificially aging" the metal at a temperature of around 180°C for about 5 hours. If it is kept at that temperature for longer, the strength falls off until you end up with something which I think is equivalent to 6061-0 which is pretty soft, but it does take time. If you are only heating the metal up to 180°C for a few minutes it will probably be OK but at higher temperatures things happen quicker and I'd guess that going above 200°C is a no-no.
