NACA duct locations?

Postby kevinh » Wed Jan 18, 2017 7:31 pm

HI ya'll,

So I have Peter's nice NACA vents. And I could swear I remember a place in the plans where Sonex shows where to cut the vent locations. Alas, I must now be blind because I can't find the right sheet. Anyone remember where it is?

then cowl, canopy, paint (photos): flush rivets, turbo aerovee, acro ailerons

Hi Kevin,
What plans number do you have?
This is only a guess but I have a suspicion Sonex might have removed the original vents from the plans as nearly everyone now implements their own preferred solution for this.
Most use the standard VANS vents which are placed forward of the original location, others use the half turn bowls that go in the windshield (I think Sonex themselves do that one), some use the new RV12 vents, many now go for Peter Anson's super cool solution or similar...
Anyway, if I don't forget I'll see if I can find the original location in my old plans (145) when I get home tonight.

Kevin,

No dimensions as such, but as high and as far forward as you can get them without interfering with any surrounding angles, tank etc.

(In the section just behind the vertical channel that supports the rudder block brackets)

Cheers

You're talking about the VANS ducted naca vents right? those indeed go as far forward as possible
The standard Sonex vents were located further aft, this is also the location Peter (Anson's) vents are located.

Hi Kevin;
Plans sheet SNX-F13 shows the cutout detail for mine. Not sure if it would be the same sheet for your WX though.

Correct, I found a scan of that drawing on my PC, I almost posted it here but then remembered that might get me in trouble.
Kevin, Send me a PM if you find your plans do not detail the location of the vents.

Kevin I would suggest the main consideration for the NACA duct vent positioning would be the clearance to the brake/flap handles, so the higher the better.
