Sonex Builders and Pilots Foundation December 2015 update

Postby Sonex Foundation » Fri Dec 18, 2015 8:11 pm

Hello everyone and happy holidays to all!

We hope you all have piles of aviation goodies and Sonex stuff under the tree as gifts!

As we close out 2015, we look at all our community has accomplished. This forum now has over 1200 members, which is a huge increase. Congratulations to Chris for making this a technical forum with such a wide variety of topics.

The Sonex Builders and Pilots Foundation has over 450 members, and according to http://builder.sonexaircraft.com/cgi-bin/search.pl?action=completions there are now currently 540 reported Sonex aircraft flying worldwide.

By our count there were 33 first flights in 2015.

Based on the results of our inaugural member picnic and BBQ in July, we are again planning a members party at Oshkosh AirVenture 2016. Once again, it must have member support in order to succeed. One change we are planning is to move the pickup location to the east side of the airport. More details will follow as Oshkosh draws near.

We are also planning a one-day Sonex get together the Saturday before AirVenture at the Rochelle, IL airport. Saturday July 23rd, 2016, we have just the place for you to stop on the way to Oshkosh. An existing fly-in in Rochelle, IL has graciously allowed us to invite Sonex pilots to stop and overnight on the way. There are no SBPF funds involved, and we are not involved in its organization. The event is called Wingfest and all things with wings are invited. For those driving up this is literally only several miles off of Interstate 39 in north central Illinois.

From the organizers: “The Comfort Inn and Suites are the closest and if you tell them you are doing business with Chicagoland Skydiving Center, they give a deep discount. Holiday Inn Express is nicer but a bit more expensive. Tell them you are in doing business with A&M Airsports for the discount.”

There is also a Super 8, a Red Roof and a couple other small ones in the area of Rochelle (no discounts).

The airport has a courtesy car. Event organizers have said they will try to help shuttle people, and there is a taxi service in town too. There are washrooms and showers on the field for people camping.
The Rochelle Comfort Inn can be reached at (815) 562-5551 and the Holiday Inn Express can be reached at (815) 562-9994. The website is http://www.airsportster.com/wingfest.html -- there is no specific information there right now.

Look for more details in the spring.

Did you know that the SBPF produces a quarterly newsletter, titled Shop Talk, for its registered members?

If you are not already a member, click here http://sonexfoundation.com/Become_a_Member.html to join so that you receive the newsletter while it is hot off the press!

We normally only send our current newsletter to members via email, and post archived issues on our website for everyone to see.

Archived issues of Shop Talk are now located on the http://sonexfoundation.com/Newsletter_Archives.html page under the News section of our site.

Membership in the Sonex Builders and Pilots Foundation is two-tiered. Club membership is free, and voting membership is $25 annually.

Membership details may be found at http://sonexfoundation.com/Become_a_Member.html

Keep in mind the foundation is a not for profit, and any donations beyond the $25 voting member dues are tax-deductible. If you are looking for a year-end write off, why not consider a donation? All the money we receive goes to keeping the website going, our photo sharing site up, and allows future projects such as making videos for our YouTube channel. (To make the videos we need good video equipment)

The Sonex Builders & Pilots Foundation has received tax exempt status from the IRS. The Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization and was granted this status in June of 2014.

We are still gathering video clips for a video project. Send us a very short clip of video showing you, your friends, your family flying your Sonex, Waiex, Onex, or Xenos. If you live somewhere with spectacular scenery, please include it! If you fly in another country, we would especially love to include it!

The goal is to make a video we can post on our YouTube channel showing the community flying their aircraft and share the excitement and fun we experience doing so.

Any HD digital video format is fine. If you are tech-savvy, I can tell you where to upload the files you can let me have access to it on DropBox or Google drive, etc. If you prefer, you can send it to on a disk, USB stick, or DVD using good old fashioned mail.

I need a short clip shot in HD and ai need to know who is in it and where it was shot.

Just send me an email at robbie@sonexfoundation.org and I will follow up with you

For me personally, I look back at 2015 with mixed emotions. While I was able to celebrate my first flight in October, there were devastating losses that tempered the celebration. I sincerely hope 2016 brings us an uneventful and safe year.
