Sonex Interiors

Just a post to get things started here.
My interior is a work in progress. I never liked the Sonex factory interior, just thought it was too flat.
So I took some old Audi seat cushions I had laying around and carved them to fit the seat tray. They give some thigh support and add to a less flat seat.

Then built up some back pads out of different densities of foam.
The fabric is UltraLeather synthetic leather. I've found it very difficult to work without some experience. So please excuse the wrinkles. If it turns out that I like the look, I might take it to a pro to have them make it right.

I think that looks great! I'm sure t looks great with your paint job. If you like it and its comfy for you, I'd say mission accomplished!!

The colors match perfectly with the paint scheme. And its damn comfortable. I did a two hour cross country in it today and found the pads moved around a bit too much. Need more velcro to hold them in place.
7.4 hours on the Hobbs, 9 flights. On my way to OSH in July me thinks!

Slightly related note: I've read a bit about the various foams available for seat cushions. The "Temperfoam" AKA "ConFor" gets high marks for comfort and especially for the ability to absorb impact and decrease spinal loading in impacts with a lot of vertical acceleration. Apparently the way it performs under rapid loading is a lot different from "normal" urethane foam. I'm thinking of going that route (with a bit of softer foam on top) when the time comes. On my interior we wanted to do something unique. The fabric is upholstery grade vinyl in the same tone (slate-khaki green/gray) but textured for the inserts and smooth in between. I wanted some red piping to brake up the panels. This turned out to be a huge project, but my awesome wife stuck in there with my ideas, and used her sewing skills to pull it through. Just need to put a few finishing touches in there still with the stick boot covers, and some side panels.







For the seat cushion foam, I used a product similar to Confor foam (developed by same chemist, but next generation of the product) called SunMate, made and sold by Dynamic Systems in North Carolina. They have about 9 different densities and you can mix and match until you like the feel. I requested a (free) sample kit, and once I found the density I liked I was able to order some overstock in 24" x 38" sheets (1" thick) and made the entire seat bottom for less than $75. It has a medium firm density for base layer, then a medium soft for top, it's the same visoelastic style foam that production seats use. Very comfy and should be safer. For the back cushion I have 2" of medium denisty upholstery grade foam (it's not the same type as the seat bottom).

As I was installing my Sonex standard upholstery kit with baggage sling, I was looking online at how others had done it but I discovered very little pictures are available,
so I guess I better put up a few of my installation now that I’m done with it.
