Hinge off- holes in decent shape. The old hinge is trashed from sanding.
Image

I don't care that the old hinge is trashed. Here I have a cheapie aluminum angle from Menards. It has a square inside corner. I butted the hinge into that corner and transferred holes.
Image

Then I popped the hinge off, got a .040" shim, and a new piece of hinge. The holes are transferred from the angle to the new hinge.
Image

Here is before and after. I am going to rivet the hinge back onto the flap with a handful of aluminum rivets tomorrow for a fit check. If it is good I'll drill them back out and rivet it for keeps.

To do things right the first time is easy. To fix a screwup takes true skill.

No pics- but I did a trial fit. The flap is nicely flush with the top skin and when the flap is bottomed out I have a little overtravel. I'm happy.

We did the other flap. Pretty good, but not as perfect as the first. We got the missing travel back.

In prep for storing the wings Thursday, we moved the Waiex to a neighboring hangar.

Adam was watching some ballgame on TV. I snuck over and put in nutplates for my tail mounted pitot tube.

Adam was watching some ballgame so I put the engine aside and worked other stuff. Here I have painted the top longerons and the mickey mouse ears.
Image

Here I've painted the tank cover. Later I noticed most of it had peeled off. Odd, I prepped this part the same as the others and they were fine. I have been having inconsistent results with the black SEM self etching primer.
Image

I tried the torch trick to remove the powder coat from the mixer. I don't think I cooked it enough as it didn't fall off as others report. Ended up using a scotch brite wheel on an angle sander.

Hmmm ... why do you have to remove powder coat in the first place?

Ihab,
Parts of that mixer weldment ride on a bronze bushing. The bushing won't go on over the powder coat. In fact, after removing the powder coat I still have to open up the bushing a little.
