When polishing with the F-9 check the surface and if all evidence of mill marks or "grain" are gone it's safe to move to the C grade. The C will not remove even the slightest mill marks but will remove some of the swirls left from the F-9. To make sure you have done enough of the C, pull it into the sunlight. Even in a well lit hanger I couldn't see the swirls until I got it into the sun. I have a couple of spots that have developed a slight under cast I think I will have to go back to F-9 to get rid of. I also haven't done the bottom of the wings, tail or belly since the parts were on the bench. If someone wants to criticize, hand them a creeper and a 7 pound buffer and tell them to call when they're done :-)

Bill,
For me it's done when I am sick of it! Grain or not! Perfect is the enemy of good enough.

I think I can support that sentiment! Procrastination has prevented me from starting the spring polish. Indecision may or may not be my problem.

No pics, but progress. So Adam's last day at school was today. They had a half day. He went to the hangar after, by himself, and finished the F9. Then he cleaned the table so we can start C.

That is pretty cool.

I finished with C on the top skin. It was a little smeary after I wiped it off but I can live with it for now.

Two more skins for C then onto riveting.

I actually measured my hangar. The two doors are 50' apart.

Adam and I were all fired up to rivet tonight. We leveled the skeleton, clecoed the top skin, whoops don't forget the aileron hinge. Wait, it's not deburred and neither is the flap hinge. Ok, now onto the LE skin. Got it clecoed to the spar, then we were mostly through clecoing the ribs. That is more of a pain because of the #31 holes. That was for the.... WE FORGOT TO DIMPLE!

Now we are dimpled, re-leveled, and chucked the top skin on with a few clecoes. Called it a night.

Hope we don't forget the aileron hinge.

Here is my latest technique for holding the wing true for assembly. I cleco the trailing edge to my shims, which are screwed down. To drill the hole in the shims, I use a long #30 bit to go through the top hole to the bottom hole. I am going to leave out some rivets on the top aft spar so I can do the same thing when I flip it.

I need my chief riveter!

One other funny story - last night we had a couple delays. First a hangar neighbor and another local stopped by looking to borrow a socket. Then we were cleaning up, getting ready for the practice leveling and clecoing exercise (the one BEFORE dimpling). I had a roll of tape to put away. I threw it over the wing, about 10', and landed it right on its spot on the pegboard. No 14 year old yet born can back down from the implied challenge when their nearly 50 year old dad makes a shot like that. Took a while to get him back on task!

PS the aileron hinge is on.
