Thanks for the feedback guys. I've flown in the cockpit several times including a few XC's in my friends Waiex with both my iPad 2 (full size) and his iPad mini. The mini with retina display works a lot better in the cockpit. So far no overheating issues with the iPad/mini. We will see how it works on the instrument panel mounted like this.

Antennas:


Replaced the nuts with anchor nut plates for all of the firewall mounted items.



Made the final plan / location for the gascolator, and have it installed now.







Ready to hang the engine! We plan to do this on Sunday...

Thanks for the post Scott. I was about to ask the southerners and those with heated garages to post videos and progress reports. -3 yesterday morning, garage below 40 an I'm about to go bonkers from lack of activity. You did the right thing, everything on my firewall is attached with nut plates.

It is a balmy 62 deg F here in Ohio today. Nice day to install an engine in the Sonex! Mike Farley and Steve Stahl came over and after following Mike's advice for installing the X accessory plate on the engine mount first, the engine install was a breeze. Two guys lifting, one installing the bolts. Maybe five minutes tops.

Waiting on some new white letter tape to arrive for my label maker.

Scott, which paint did you use on your engine case, and what was your method for masking the machined surfaces?

Ryan - I used Rustoleum Engine Enamel, 500 deg F in gloss Black.

I cleaned the surfaces to be painted with Spray brake cleaner. Wiped down surfaces thoroughly. Use high quality yellow AutoBody masking tape for covering areas not to receive paint.

This paint is pretty durable and can be cleaned up with lacquer thinner.

Will see how it holds up, I've used it in the past on an aluminum engine in my kit car project.
