I drilled and reamed my spars together on my drill press. Final ream was .3725". Then I used a bushin to transfer the holes to the fuselage. The fit is awesome. I highly recommend this technique. When my wings are on and I shake the tip in any direction there is no slop.

I used the Fastenal bit I linked to earlier in this thread (sounds like the same one you are using). Unfortunately, I don't remember the diameter I measured for the AN6 bolt. My experience was the same as Corby202--only had to tap the bolts in when installing on the airplane.

I occasionally shake the airplane by the wingtip to see if there's any looseness and I haven't noticed any.

I did find the 3/8 by 1/4 inch Id tube so all you would need is a 1/4 inch drill bit about 6 inches long. If you need them just let me know. I might run across the 1/4 inch drill bit by then.

Thanks for the replies. Great info. I feel a lot better moving forward on the wings.

Greetings fellow Sonex builders! Recently, I discovered that our local airport manager is good friends with Jeff Schultz. I had a few questions regarding wing rigging and he put us in touch. Very nice guy. Jeff recommended I create a post asking if anyone has a set of wing drilling bits that they are willing to loan. I'm ready to rig and would be grateful for the opportunity to borrow a set. Thanks in advance for any assistance out there.

Regards,

try the ASA link below. John Davis was the contact in years past but not sure who keeps the loaner tools at this point

All -

Resurrecting this thread for a quick question: When you use the long drill bit & steel tube bushing method and are drilling front-to-back, are you using a 90-degree adapter on your drill (due to the angled fwd fuselage sides)?

Thanks,

Noel,
I used a pneumatic drill. It was small enough to fit. I may have trimmed a foot long 1/4" bit to get the optimal length.

Ah, perfect illustration of the needed space. Thanks!
