Koul tools for AN6 braided hoses assembly

We bought one for our AN6 lines. We did a bunch of them the hard way first. I haven't used the tool myself, as Adam made our hoses. His review is very positive. It is basically a plastic funnel that squishes down the braiding as you spin the hose into the fitting.

I'm not impressed with the need for this tool or the accuracy of the video demonstrating it's use. First, if the hose is wrapped with masking tape and a Dremel tool with a small cutting disk is used, the braided end of the hose comes out looking much neater than the video would imply. Second, the video depicts the hose being turned into the sleeve fitting in a clockwise direction. But the sleeve fitting has a left hand thread and you could turn the hose all day in a clockwise direction and it will never be properly seated. The video seems to have been principally made to promote the sale of the special tool and to not necessarily aid in the installation of these hose fittings.

You absolutely do not need this tool. We made our first 4 fittings without it. It sucked each time but we got it done.

We did wrap with tape and use the cutoff wheel on the 4" grinder. I'll try the Dremel on scrap and see if we can do better, just in the name of science.

There are no threads involved in twisting the hose into the fitting. That just helps you jam it in. The threaded part goes on after the hose is in.

It worked for us - wish I had it earlier.

I would buy the tool if it cut down on the Band Aids. On my last two aircraft I have used Teflon hoses not rubber they a lot easier to assemble but you can still get spiked with the braid. Teflon hose is unaffected by all fuels, oils, alcohols, coolants, or solvents commonly used in aircraft, service and shelf life of Teflon hose are unlimited for all practical purposes.

One sharp blow with a 3 lbs sledge hammer and sharp chisel cuts very clean.

Are you using the Jegs brand hose fittings? I almost always buy the Russell Brand hose fittings and the sleeve is threaded on those and I didn't realize they came any other way. The outward appearance is nearly identical but it's not possible from the photos to tell if the Jegs sleeves are threaded or not. I know that we are not running much pressure in our hoses but I personally appreciate the grip that the threaded sleeve provides and the threads may actually assist in inserting the braid into the sleeve.

Working with stainless steel wire whether in the form of braid or safety wire really sucks but at least those wounds caused by either generally heal quickly.
