Wanting to borrow TIME_SERT kit for Aero-Vee

Hi all! Just ordered the AeroVee engine for my Sonex TD, discussed using the TIME_SERT system with Kerry and got no bad reports from him, so I am going to install these inserts at the very first proir to mounting the heads.

Is there anyone who has already done this and has the appropriate kit (I will supply my own inserts of course) and would be willing to let me borrow that kit to do my heads when they arrive later this month?

I am located in Texas north of Dallas and would do a local pick up and deliver.

Thanks in advance! :)

Just curious, where are you going to be installing the Time-serts? I had previously stored this http://vwparts.aircooled.net/VW-Tool-Rental-s/976.htm of a place that rents the timesert tools for $25....

Hi Kevin! since the threads in any aluminum head, even on auto heads, are subject to stress when removing the plugs, the threads can often come out with the plug. So, I am going to try to prevent any problems by initially installing a good set of inserts such as TIME-SERTS. Just beforehand preventive action, that is all!

I am still asking to borrow a TimeSert install tool kit for thread size 12-1.25 metric plugs. I dont want to actually buy the kit if I can avoid it, but will be glad to rent it from anyone. I did have a web site that does rent tools like this, but not in this size. I am ready to do this operation now and would like to get it done!! PM me if needed!

Thanks!

All,
I am going to time-sert my heads. Do we have the installation tool in the Sonexbuilders pool or should I rent from Aircooled?

Hi Bryan!I have done the very same thing, as I suspected, the factory threads were only half deep and would have certianly pulled out in short order.

I did do mine proactively (see my kitlog site..mykitlog.com/josephnelsen... for pictures. I do have the kit, but you should order your own inserts.I ordered a couple extra just to be sure I didnt mess one up (I didnt!) I used the 17mm long ones, and dremmelled off the part that protruded into the chanber, as well as some of the new cut exposed threads sharp points.

I am willing to lend the instal kit to you, but I do need it right back after you are done. I dont want the kit to be passed from place to place without being returned to me first. PM me with your partictulars and I will get it out as fast as I can, but probably wont be able to do so this week due to rush job at work taking my sonex time too!

HINT: if you have not used this timesert kit before, find a piece of 1/2 to 1.0 inch thick scrap aluminum to practice on first. It isnt hard, but it is not like heilicoils. I was very impressed with them and was very glad I spent the money and time to be proactive. :D

I just got my heads back. Question: are there builders out there who don't have timeserts but are happy with their heads? Second question, if I go the timesert route what is the correct p/n? What is the best source-aircooled.net?

Are these the right inserts?

They had 1/2" and 3/4". Also there were big-serts, I assume this is if you really screw up.
