Hinge pilot holes

Postby Bryan Cotton » Sun Mar 29, 2015 8:26 pm

A while back I posted my hinge pilot drilling tool. It had one issue- the exit hole always had a hugemongus burr. Before I could lay the hinge down and transfer the #40 holes I would need to deburr them. So, I used the edge of the oak board to lay the hinge loops over, and put my alignment piece on the vertical edge.

Note there is a little divot to the left of the drill spot. I put that in with the dremel (a 1/4" hole would also work) so the hugemongus burr would not push the hinge away from the board. If the hinge is not flat the drill bit wanders. I always drill from left to right, though if you put a relief on the other side you can go either way. Also there is some slop in the hinge fit, I set up the part so the bit would be located when you push the part to the left against the slop.

So now I leave the humongus burr, because when I drill up to #30 it will be gone.
