So, does any of that translate to 5 cans to cover the cowl? That is all Walmart had.

I used 3-4 cans for all my paint (all fiberglass parts), plus 2-3 cans of primer, plus 1-2 cans of clearcoat gloss. Got what I paid for (<$100), has the same 20-foot shine as my polish job.

Question for you rattle can folks: do you have an issue with the spray pattern as the can gets empty? With a new can the paint comes out in a fan, but after a bit it is more like a circle. My cowl is orange but only looks good from a distance or in a low resolution photo.

Hi Bryan, I had a little bit of an issue with that, but I was shaking the can very frequently. Like 5-10 seconds of spraying, shake for 10 seconds or so, repeat. And if it got low enough to sputter, I just moved on to a new can since they're so cheap. Paint still looks good from about 5 feet away, but up-close you can still probably tell it wasn't a "proper" paint job.

Hi Guys,

From what y'all have said I assume you're not following up the paint with a polishing compound/swirl remover.?.? I think you can polish out just about any paint if a good shine is what is wanted. If you decide to try it, try it on a piece of scrap first. It is easy to burn through the paint but the appearance is drastically different if you can pull it off.

Ryan and Wes,
Good input from both of you. Thanks! For now I am declaring the paint good enough for flight test, but it is uneven and I have a few runs. I'll revisit this thread and that job in the spring.

I think I need better lighting also.

Wes, wow, yea my rattle-can job definitely has no reflection whatsoever, might have to look into doing that in the future.

Hi Ryan,

I don't have a lot of experience with polishing. What I did was use what I had. It was left over from a paint job my Son and his buddy did over 15 years ago. I had to buy some new pads. Seemed to work pretty well. I did put that extra coat of paint on knowing what I going to do next.

Used this:

Followed up with Carnauba wax I think.?.?

I would like to use Rustoleum High Performance enamel spray on my glass & plastic parts only because it has the color I want, safety blue.

Any thoughts on using this type of paint on the glass & plastic parts? Any prep recommendations? This paint was mentioned in a previous post in this thread but used on wings.

I'm a huge fan of the krylon paint when it comes to plastic parts, I also like the rustoleum painters touch 2x spray paints, the universal spray angle is also a nice feature on those cans.
I would spray on an adhesion promoter, can most likely find a spray can of the duplicolor stuff wherever you're getting your other spray bombs from, helps it stick a bit better to flexible parts.
Scuff with 400 if it isn't a metallic paint, clean it well then spray. Add a couple coats of clear and then you can wet sand and buff and nobody will have a clue it was spray bombed.
