Unpolishing

Postby sonex892. » Sun Nov 24, 2019 4:28 am

9 years of NOT maintaining the polish on the underside of the wings has finally caught up with me. They either needed to be removed to polish or be painted. Living in a coastal area I have decided the most sensible thing to do is to paint. Tossed up whether to do just under the wings or the entire plane, have decided to paint the entire plane. Its kinda heartbreaking to destroy the polished finish to prepare for painting.

Hi Steve, even paint jobs don't last forever. After 7+ years my Sonex is looking very tatty and flying through rain recently compounded the problem by stripping paint around what were just chips in the paint.

Steve,
My condolences. Very sad. I did most of a restoration project on a C140 back in my old EAA chapter in New York. The retired guys who finished it found damage and Bondo on the horizontal stabilizer, and decided to paint the whole thing. Had I still been there I would have rebuilt the stab.

Thanks for the condolences Bryan. It did hurt to destroy all those hours and years of polishing, but the bright side is, there will be no more polishing!
I picked a great time to paint. The visibility was to poor to fly, due to smoke from the fires. An added bonus of the smoke was the very low humidity and there were no insects to walk over the wet paint.
After being out of action for about 3 weeks It flew in its new colours on the 7th of December.

Thanks Phil. Rego was swapped to the dark side in 2016.

Damn! That's another Sonex I have to avoid parking near at fly-ins. Either that or I have to erect a fence so nobody can get closer than about 10 metres to mine.

By the way, is that the same spinner you have had all along? What sort?

Hi Pete. Don't worry too much, it only looks good from 20 foot.
Same spinner as all along. Cant buy that size spinner. but I do have a mould.
