Paint Products?

Postby MichaelFarley56 » Wed Jun 29, 2011 4:21 pm

Greetings,

It sounds like a lot of people on this board have either painted their aircraft or are nearing the point where they can start thinking about it, so I would like to start a post to ask those with paint jobs to talk a little about what they used. A few common questions would be:

What brand/kind of paint did you use on your Sonex?

Did you use any kind of primer?

Did you paint the airplane yourself or have someone else paint it?

Any good pointers?

On our first homebuilt, we used PPG (single stage) products and had a friend paint the plane at his grass strip. After the paint was day we finished with vinyl striping from an aircraft decal shop. I'm currently considering using either the same thing on my Waiex, or possibly try the Stewart Systems products for their non-toxic nature.

Thank you everyone, and fly safe!

Hi mike. I have been trying to upload a pdf file for a Graphics co. in the States without any luck.
They specialize in aircraft graphics from fancy stripes to logos and numbers/letters .Here is an example of one of the custom logos they made for Jack Philips Pietenpol http://www.textors.com/Brodhead2008_137 ... 40x480.jpg
If you would like the pdf file, I am able to e-mail it,so if you or any one else wishes to have it, e-mail me with your e-mail and I will send it to you.

Hi, guys. I had a friend do the paint as I did everything on the plane twice and I did not want the same situation with paint...

So, all I can tell you is that it's PPG Ford Mustang Orange, with clearcoat with a bunch of other things thrown in.

Here are the cans...

I keep bouncing between shooting it myself (having no previous experience) and finding an auto body or other paint shop to do it. I'd like to learn to paint, but I really don't want to screw up the paint on my Sonex...

BTW, somebody posted the link to http://www.stewartsystems.aero/ who seem to have a very nice non-toxic aircraft paint system.
