Location of headset jacks/plugs

Just got to the stage of installing headset female jack/plug points. Having difficulty with making the decision of where to place them. What have you done (photos would be great ???

I like the headset jacks behind me out of the way. So, I located the jacks on the backside of the rollover bulkhead and just toss the wires over my shoulder into the baggage compartment while getting strapped in.

Wires are below the level of the structure so don't get smacked, and they don't hang off the panel in my lap.

Wes, looks like the 'ring' (ground) of your jacks are grounded to the airframe. That is an avionics no/no. Do you have any trouble with them like that?

Skippy, my solution might not be possible for most folks. What I like about these is that they are easy to get to and the plugs are tucked against the side so they don't get in the way. See them there on the sides.

What is shown in the pick are extension sockets for the hand held radio I'm using.


I've never given it much thought but It might be electrically different than a normal jack. It's never been a problem. Always gotten a loud and clear when I called for a check. Early on one of the guys I asked didn't answer but another guy 60 miles away did. At first I thought I had a problem but it was just silly me having the squelch disabled.

Mine are wired cross cockpit. Much easier to plug in on the other side. I also hang my headsets up on the opposite side.

Sounds like a good idea. Same concept as WesRagle.

I would like to come up with a design/location that;

[list=]Has the jacks/sockets behind pilot/passenger, to keep as much of the headset leads out of the cockpit as possible
Incorporates a headset "hook"/stow point.
Minimises the chance of damage to plug/socket.
Covers all the electrical wiring & back end of socket
Accessible in flight should a plug come loose/not quite making contact [/list]

Very nice Bryan - Can you post a photo of headset plugs in sockets, looking from the front of the aircraft back ?

I would like to have an idea of how much/far the plugs project into the baggage area.
