Landing Gear

I plan to drill my main gear legs at the axle first, and then drill the upper holes in place. After drilling the tail spring, I feel that match drilling the gear legs inside the axles and motor mount will work best for me. My question is where to set the gear legs in the axle for drilling. The plans method is to drill a hole 1/2 inch from the top, mount in the motor mount, then set the axle at 16 1/16" below the bottom of the fuselage. Since I plan to drill the axle side first, I don't want to stuff the gear leg until it bottoms out in the axle, and then wind up short on the top. Does anyone remember about how far the gear leg went in to the axle? Did it bottom out?

Thanks,

Nate

Nate,
I think mine bottomed out. Here is one thread on the subject:

Nate, my experience is the same as Bryan's...bottomed out.

I see in this old thread that ya'lls gear bottomed out in the axle weldments. This confuses me because by my measurements I'll need to back the gear leg out about 5/8" from the end of each weldment. Also, my plans say to set the axles 16 43/64" from the bottom of the fuse, not 16 1/16". When ya'll say "bottomed out" you are talking about the leg was all the way into the axle assembly?

The 16 43/64" dimension Sonex gives on SNX-L01 is perpendicular to the bottom of the fuse, but with the 30 deg swept back gear it seems to me the distance in the plane of the gear should be about 19.25" ( 16 43/64" / cos(30 deg) ).

Puzzling. It feels like I must be screwing something up if everyone else's leg is bottoming out in the axle weldment?
