wing Bolts

Hi guy's i got my aircraft over to the airport and having problems getting the wing bolts in am i missing something ? the wings where on this aircraft once before , so i know they should fit , :?:

Lots of people use these instead of the AN6 bolts:

I got these from McMaster,

Because they have a tapered tip, they go in a lot easier, might be something to try if all else fails.

Are you doing it with the rubber trim installed? Getting my wings on seems impossible without removing the rubber trim. I need to re install it after bolting the wings up.

Steve are they as strong as the AN bolts that are 125,000 tensile strength

I found it difficult to get the spars lined up exactly so that the bolts will go through. I bought some 3/8" carriage bolts and ground down the tips like taper pins. I put these in first and they line up the spars as they go in. Then drive out the carriage bolts with either AN bolts or hitch pins (the use of hitch pins has been approved by Sonex). A little grease helps things go smoother.

I and some others have only gotten the wings to go together properly if you start with the RIGHT wing first. I don't know why, but we could never get them to go all the way in and align if we started with the left wing.

This is because the right wing spar sits aft of the left wing spar, You can insert the right wing and put the pins in halfway to hold the spar in position, then insert the left wing and push the pins the rest of the way through with only 1 moving part (left spar.)

BTW, you can see in those instruction sheets that Sonex is using hitch pin bolts, not AN bolts.

But interestingly those Sonex instructions never explicitly say to start with the right wing. So anyone putting their wings on has a 50/50 shot at getting it "right" (no pun intended). And the issue hasn't been getting the bolts through, it's getting the wing spar to go all the way in so that the wing skin contacts the fuselage, signifying that the wing spars are fully overlapped. That seems to be what doesn't happen (at least more often than not) unless you start with the right wing. I had yet another builder confirm that to me today.

!00% correct Mike you have to start with the right wing this is while sitting in your aircraft , I know cause i tried getting them to match up for 2 days finally looked on the fourm , Mike came back with the correct way and my wings went right in and with little effort i got the long bolts though what a pain in the a -- thank you MIKE
