I love flying my Sonex!

Most of you probably already know this feeling but after almost 2 years of flying my Sonex, I took a BFR in a 172 last weekend. It felt like flying a bus compared to the light, responsive controls of the Sonex. I love it!

I love my Sonex too! The precise handling is fantastic! The speed range is phenomenal! It is a great flying aircraft. All of us builders and pilots are one lucky bunch! Plus the economy is unbelievable. The guy in the hangar next to me just had to pay $60,000 for some engine work on his Cessna T206. I thought just for the price of that engine work a person could build two Sonex aircraft. I love only burning four gallons per hour too! That is a whole lot of fun for a little bit of money!

The weather was nice so I took a half vacation day form work today to go fly my Sonex. Two hours of pure fun doing nothing more than just enjoying some sight seeing at 120 mph in the local area. Total cost: $32 for gas (8 gallons at $4 a gallon of 93 octane). Much faster than the Cub I flew this summer, much more responsive than the Cessna 172 I trained in, and much cheaper than anything I could even think about renting.

Glad to hear you got out today! I did, too. I had my best landings in weeks :-) I listened to the Willamantic frequency but didn't hear anything. How's your mixture and your temps?

Willimantic! Maybe someday I will fly my Waiex out there. I went to school at Uconn, not far away.

Bryan - If you are ever out that way shoot me an e-mail. I'm always up for meeting other builders and talking Sonex. That goes for anyone else on the list that ever wants to fly or drive over to KIJD.

Mike - Temps were all in the green and I didn't really have to play with the mixture all that much. Flying the Sonex in 50 degree weather at a sea level based airport with negative 1500 foot density altitude makes that easy though. If anything it was running a little cold with the cylinders at 310, EGT's at 1100 in cruise, and oil temperature about 150.

Here is a picture to give all my fellow builders inspiration to continue on...

Keep on building and flying!
