You also have to keep in mind that some EFIS systems have a lead time, so plan accordingly. What I did was get a price "estimate" during the panel planning stage. I then had a $$$ figure to work toward. I narrowed it down to 2-3 vendors and then waited until the forward fuselage pieces were completed but not assembled. While I waited for the parts to arrive, I used various drawing and CAD software to plan placement and hole locations and complete the forward fuselage.

But there's a balancing act, you want to want as long as possible to take advantage of new features and good pricing, but you also want to be able to plan ahead, which you can only do if you know what equipment you're going to buy. I'm in the "look but don't buy yet" phase at the moment. :)

Considering how many times a day I'm wiping finger prints off my iPad screen I think I would prefer buttons. However I am hoping to use my iPad as a supplement to a eFIS.

Dan,

I have an iPad also - I plan to fly with it on the panel, but with an anti-reflective film cover - the film sheets also don't show finger prints quite as badly in my opinion....

Just my two cents

I have an iPad...when the screen is on fingerprints are invisible. When it's off...who cares? ;)

I've been using my iPad in the cockpit for quite some time now and really like the situation awareness it brings. I installed a RAM mount ball on the panel which allows me to mount a number of items. During my recent trip to Alabama, I used ForeFlight going and WingX coming back. Both worked well, but I preferred WingX. On my flight to AirVenture this year I used WingX exclusively and it worked well. I was hoping that Radenna (skyradar.net) would have a show special at AirVenture and I'd pick up the ADS/B receiver, but their only special was no tax.....I'll wait and see how things play out.

I do have a anti-glare screen protector on my iPad that really helps. I never had any point that I couldn't read the iPAD.

That's good news on the iPad. I would hope I could do a better job of applying the anti-glare screen on the iPad than I did on my phone. I tried the demos for WingX and Foreflight and I liked WingX better too. I just wish the WingX subscription was the same price as Foreflight.

If you have any knowledge of how a typical Boeing style FMS works and you have a windows mobile based PDA, I can provide you with my own developed software.
It accurately (as much as possible anyway) simulates the workings of a Boeing (757/767 in this case) FMC with HSI screen.
You can have the power of a Boeing style navigation system in your Sonex!

I was planning on commercializing this software at one stage but I was too late, by the time I finished development, windows mobile PDA's became redundant with the coming of the iPhone and Android. (Maybe one day I'll port the software to iPhone or Android but for now I'm too busy building my Sonex)
Anyway, send me an PM if you'd like a copy.

here's some pictures of my brother (who's an airline pilot) demonstrating the software in the Fokker50 he flies, also included is a picture of the real thing on a Boeing 767 flight deck to compare:
