The Sonex Waiex-B One-Week-Wonder plane took to the skies above Oshkosh this morning.

Thanks to EAA, Sonex, the public that 'pulled a rivet' and especially to my fellow volunteers. Great job everyone!

Who was the lucky person who got to fly it the first time?

Our good friend and regular contributor on these forums, Joe Norris, had the honor! He’s a busy guy flying a lot of cool airplanes up at Oshkosh but if he gets a chance, hopefully he can offer a few tidbits on how the flight went!

Congratulations Sonex, EAA and Joe for the successful first flight of the One Week Wonder Waiex!

Great to see them flying a Rotax. I can't wait to hear some numbers from that engine and prop combo.

Finally getting a chance to pop in here with a quick flight report on the OWW. In short, it flies great! Just like a Waiex should! There are some details to be worked out regarding cowling configuration as it relates to oil cooling, but the team is working on that and I will be testing some modifications shortly. Once the oil cooling issue is dealt with I will be able to start gathering some good performance numbers. All I can say right now is that it climbs like crazy and handles very well. I will report back when I have more info. Stay tuned!!

Re: Oil Cooling - I was concerned about that seeing it tucked away into the back center of the cowl. It's good to see refinements are continuing. Hopefully, the sleek form of the cowl can be maintained vs a big old oil radiator square out there in the wind. Maybe another naca duct ala the cold air intake will do the trick?

I am assuming climb performance is due to a much larger diameter prop. What prop is it running?

Last I saw it was only 60" 82" pitch. It's hard to believe that's enough prop for a 100HP geared engine. I'll be really interested to see RPMs for climb and max level speed.

EAA has a video posted of the first flight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWDY84rpqUw

I've flown the airplane three times now, and we are making progress. More to come!

Curious if there's any new updates on the OWW? Have oil temps been sorted? Any updates on performance in climb/cruise?
