1611 First Flight

Postby eppre » Thu Jul 28, 2016 8:25 am

After 3 + years I got my FAA Airworthiness Certificate on Monday.

Yesterday (Wed) I made my first flight of 28 minutes. It was not pretty but nothing got bent.

Need to address some heat issues and I will try it again. I think my timing is off because a couple of cylinders and oil temp was high.

Thanks for all your help over the past years.

Congrats on your first flight Peter! It's pretty common to have higher temps on the first few flights. Make small adjustments to the aeroinjector and timing (preferably one at a time) and follow the aerovee manual for tuning. Get back up there once it's running good on the ground and fly the engine above 3100 rpm for around an hour to get the rings seated.

Thanks for all of the advice. Scott did you have high oil temps as well as cht. I have two hot cyls and the oil temp got quit hot. I had to do a go around because I was to hot on my first landing and was running out of runway. So things one cyl was well over 400 and the oil temp was 250.

My oil temps have been rock solid in the green so far. I did have a high oil pressure reading during my ground runs which turned out to be from the wrong setting in my MGL Xtreme.

Do you have the top mount oil cooler or bottom? Are the cooling baffles well sealed? If you have the top mount cooler, did you fabricate the oil cooler air exit baffle correctly?

The high CHT's can be resolved by richening the mixture (I did no more than 1/4 turn richer per tuning session). Also check that your secondary ignition is not too advanced. This really can only be done properly in flight. Climb to an altitude and level off and stabilize the engine rpm. Fly with both sides ignitions on for 5-10 mins, check your CHT's and EGT's. Then turn off the secondary, do the same and fly for 5-10 mins, and record the RPM, CHT's and EGT's. Based on what your reporting...you should see a decrease in temps. Repeat this for the primary igniting (turn it off and fly on secondary only). Record the numbers.

The AeroVee and AeroInjector manual indicate the acceptable range and if your high what to do with the mixture and timing.

It took me about 5-6 flights and tuning sessions to get my engine to a comfortable range. Remember before you get around 25 hours on the engine it will tend to run hot, until it gets more broken in.

I'm at 7.7 hours and during my flight yesterday, while doing touch and go's, my CHT's were 330-350, and EGT's were in the high 1100-1220, and my oil temp is around 210, oil pressure is at 45-50.
