Sun-n-Fun 2023

Postby Bryan Cotton » Thu Jan 19, 2023 12:20 pm

Hey all,
Mid March I'm planning a trip to Tennessee to visit my parents with Adam, and take my dad for a ride. Then two weeks later repeat the trip with my youngest Matthew, and then go on to Sun-n-Fun. Anybody else going?

Has anybody used the ADSB deviation tool to get into Sun-n-Fun before? Or does the NOTAM change the mode C veil?

A couple of thoughts....

Operating without ADSB in that part of the world might not be a great decision. You could make it "legal" but it might not be salfe.

Even if you get an exemption - in the heat of the moment ATC may not accept it:

"An ADS-B deviation authorization granted using ADAPT does not equal, nor does it guarantee, an ATC clearance into airspace where ADS-B Out equipment is required."

--

Round here in New England you will get it if it is to make a trip to an Avionics shop for a repair. But it is not given as a sort of "routine" way of operating without ADSB for a non-equipped plane. Attending something like SnF would be considered "elective" and you should equip. At least around here.

It seems like in prior years, they have excluded the airspace over KLAL by NOTAM. I'm hoping it's the same this year.

I agree that ADSB is great. Money and time are the only barriers. I won't have ADSB in March.

I'll be there with my new Sonex. Lucky for me KLAL is 49nm from my airport and my testflight radius is 50nm. If memory serves, there is an ADSB exemption in a corridor through the KMCO airspace for Sun n Fun. However, central FL is crazy busy during normal times. It'll be tough work flying in here without ADSB.

The notam published last week. It does have the ADSB exclusion. Pushes the 30 mile mode C veil over.
