OSH 16

Postby Sonex1517 » Sat May 07, 2016 9:58 am

Hey everyone

A short two months, two weeks or so until Oshkosh....hard to believe!

This won't be my first year going by any means, but it sure will be a special one. I am flying Sonex 1517 in to fulfill a childhood dream of building my own airplane and flying it to Oshkosh!

It will also be bittersweet. We bought memorial bricks for my brother Mike and my friend Dane and both will be at the brown arch this year....

Who else is going?

I am planning on going. Possibly solo, as Adam will be in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. I'll be flying up the 99 saturn. Maybe I'll bring a piece of 191YX for luck.

I'm shooting for my seventh year in a row in the Waiex. The metal bender named Mika would laugh but I'm proud of that streak.

If the tradition continues, I'll be near or with the Farley's in Homebuilt Camping.

Now Kip seven years is awesome! I will run some interference for you with Bob since this will be the third year for my wife and I to fly the Sonex up. Yes, I am proud of the streak too even if Bob is laughing. Bob is a role model for sure! My wife and I will be camping in the home built camping area again this year. We can't wait and are looking forward to seeing everyone!

I plan to be there. It'll be something like 15 years in a row, but only #2 with my Sonex. I'm hoping to organize a Sonex group arrival, either for the Sunday morning of the Sonex Homecoming, or the day before on Saturday. Not a mass arrival in formation; just a group of us taking off from the same airport nearby, and flying in the traditional conga line for the VFR arrival. More info to follow, but will entertain input on which day (or Saturday afternoon as the primary and Sunday morning as the fall back?).

At this point I'm certainly planning on attending! I hope to fly the Waiex up again in formation with my father in his Wheeler Express while the rest of the family is on driving duty. In years past I've always been very happy with flying up to KOSH on Saturday to beat most of the Sunday "mass arrivals." Personally, I'm much happier watching the arrivals from my chair on the ground as opposed to being up there in the middle of the hysteria! I'm hoping to have my Waiex in either HBP-Sonex Row or back in HBC; I haven't decided exactly where yet.

Kip- I hope you're able to camp with us again! I always appreciate your guidance in selecting the proper BEvERages for our camp!

I am flying in with a Friend in his Mooney in the Mooney Caravan mass arrival on Sunday. I will be camping with his plane but hope to hang out and meet all of you guys and see your planes and engage in the beverage selection of the day. I flew up last year in my Ercoupe for the 75th anniversary and got to Fly in the airshow on Monday....What a blast!! My Ercoupe is down for a few months and the Waiex is under construction and patiently waiting for "B" enhancements. Oh, I will be leaving on Thursday morning

Hi all,
Wow time IS flying! I always stay the whole week. Some of the highlites i've found over the years:

Sun) Pre day at airventure. See it all coming together. Sonex open house and homecoming.
Mon) Sonex evening hangar party
Tue) Lifetime members dinner in the EAA eagle hangar. Not to be missed.
Wed) Free coffee and doughnuts at the homebuilt registration bldg on flightline
Thur) homebuilders dinner at the nature center pavilion, best fried chicken and fixins ever! Tickets at the homebuilt registration on flightline. Charlie Becker mc's, always a good guest speaker. Also some special awards given out. Always a good time.
Fri) head over to Wendt's on the lake . Best fish and chips u'll ever have. Indoors and outdoor tent in back all week.
Sat) head down to the seaplane base for the annual watermelon social. Start out with a yearly etched beer mug and beverage of choice. Brats ham or tri tip over the years w fixins and lots of watermelon. Live band and a few seaplanes coming and going.
Sun) very erie as it all winds down.......everyone's leaving town.
The evening airshows are not to be missed. If you want a engraved plaque of your plane with a polaroid picture on it , head over to the antique red barn. Best free popcorn and lemonade ever! Go to the back and you'll find one of those eaa volunteer's thats been doing their gig for years. Join the antique division, and you get the plaque gratis. Renew every year during eaa at the red barn, and get a yearly plaque. Dont forget sunscreen and misquito spray, especially with the zika virus upon us. Fly safe, as always , when i spoke to pilot groups, fuel and weather. Dont push it. Your ever friendly retired FAA employee,

Good chance I'll be able to it again. 7th straight year, 4th to fly in, 3rd my Waiex. I'm really only good for 3 days. Not sure if I'll do first half or second of week.

Robbie,

It will be a treat for you. It is very special to see the airplane you built on the flightline at Oshkosh.

This will be the sixth year for 982SX.
