Mid West Sonex Fly In

Postby planeolbob » Fri Mar 13, 2015 10:29 pm

Hello Everyone,
This year we will be having our 2015 MWSFI at the VAA 16 hanger located at Gardner Kansas Airport (K34). The date is Saturday, May 23.
We will have more information as our planning develops. One thing we will have is Geary Marsolais and his Turbo AeroVee. He will answer your questions on this new addition to our engine options.

This should be the best one yet.
More details to follow.

2015 Midwest Sonex Fly In

May 11 Update

Hi everyone, it is less than two weeks to go until the fly in. We are expecting a good turn out with aircraft from Arkansas, Colorado, Missouri and of course, Kansas. Several builders and other interested parties have said they plan to attend. We may have a record turn out if the weather holds.

This year we will have a rain date of Sunday May 24. We hope we will not need it. I have posted Hotel and taxi information on the Flickr Fly In Site:

The hotel manager told me that at this time she had a limited amount of rooms available and that some of them were smoking. If you are considering staying at the Gardner Super 8 you should contact them soon. There are other hotels in the area you can choose from.

In addition to the items listed on the poster we will add:

1.Ron Sipple has a small box of “Goodies” we will use for door prizes. We may have more as time goes on.
2.Ed Veach will be talking about his experience checking out in a newly purchased Sonex.
3.I will be showing how I made my “Lindburgh” tank and my new Acme bombs.
4.Ray Kurian with a video of his Vacuforming the leading edges of his wings.

We will update our information again before the 23rd. See you at Gardner!

Hi everyone,
Today I received my fly in package from the Sonex folks. I have posted a photo of some of the door prizes we will have for those in attendance.

I have been watching the weather and it seems to be improving a bit.

We will see. However, we will be at Gardner on the 23rd.
See you there.

Marginal weather did not deter the enthusiasm for this year’s event. However, with ceilings around 1000’ it did limit the number of aircraft.

Besides my aircraft that I flew in on Friday, Gus Schlegel made it from Lee Summit along with Mark Kingman and Geary Marsolais from Topeka. All four pilots have “Nuvite Poisoning. Along with those that flew in we had several folks that drove in. Ed Veatch, who now has Charlie Radford’s old Sonex and Ray Kurian who just flew his for the first time this month, drove in. Builder Ron Sipple was one of several builders in the mix. Ted Thomas was there in his Luscombe.

The program started with signing in and handing out information packs and fly in stickers. Attendees were free to view the aircraft and ask any questions. Several conversation on building technique or process of one part or system was common as it is at any gathering. Every builder seems to have their own method to solve their unique condition. This interchange of ideas is the most valuable thing we do at these functions.

When Gus arrived he did a great low pass as shown at the end of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RY5jZyXV3Q

Next on the program was a talk by Geary on the installation and flying of his Turbo AeroVee. Here is a video of this conversation:

Be sure to have your volume turned up as the audio is a bit weak.

Ray Kurian next gave a talk and video on bending his leading edge. You can see some shots of this on my “Flickr” site here:

We hope to have more photos posted in the near future as several attendees were taking photos like crazy.

Our final program item was the door prizes. Thanks to the great folks at Sonex and donations from Ron and Ray we had enough for everyone.

Since the ceiling was low and rain in the area we did not have the opportunity to fly out to We B Smokin or give Sonex Smile rides. All to soon Gus, Geary and Mark needed to leave for home.

We had around 35 guests and were able to hand out information packs and answer many questions. Considering the weather we had a good time.

We would like to give many thanks to the local Sonex Group and VAA 16 for the use of their facility. We plan to have the 2016 fly in on the May 28th and at the same location.

As we receive more photos and videos we will be posting them on the sites above.

See you next year!
