How to reduce the size of pictures?

I tried to upload a picture and was told it was to big 1.5 GB i think it said and the largest accepted was 200 and something kb.Question is ,how do I reduce the size?
I have a Mac and I can't find any info on doing this.Anyone?

If you use http://imageshack.us/ to host your photo it will automatically resize it for you which will reduce the file size as well as the dimensions. It will also give you the code to copy and paste to post in forums.
