We plan to finish that hummelbird mentioned in the story & video. Will probably get to it this winter. For now we are flying and also have a major car project to knock out.

I bought a set of Super Cub drawings and we are considering a scratch-built project. I have held a set of Skybolt plans for a long time, but so far Adam does not have the aerobatic interest and a PA18 would probably be the sensible choice. It fills in one of the gaps the Waiex has - short and rough field performance. I have a fair amount of Super Cub time, as well as other cub family aircraft (PA12 & J3). They are great airplanes.

I also agree with what you say about the true roots of EAA. Nice for them to run a story like this, and not all warbirds, gold lindys built to absolute perfection, and airplanes that most of the readership could never afford or own.

Sounds fun, i see the hummel has a a great website , build videos, parts, subkits, or complete kits.
What model hummel?

The supercub PA-18. Every year see tons of parts PA-18 in the fly market. My father and i spent many hours
everyday scrounging , our favorite place at airventure.

Again , a great article, reminds us all of how the eaa started and spread its mission.
I can see President Paul smiling from above.

It's an original Morry Hummel design hummelbird with the 1/2 VW engine, scratch built from Bill Spring's plans. It's actually quite far along.

So on the last page, page 78, there is an in-flight picture. I thought I'd share some background info on the picture. Adam flew a couple of the passes, including the one they showed in the EAA video on youtube. The middle pass I flew, and decided to beat up the pattern for some cool video. That was a smoking (for us) 130 kt pass, and I topped 3700 RPM when I went wide open. Sounded glorious. You can see Adam is holding his phone and taking video from inside the cockpit. Pretty impressive to get a still of that quality at 130 kts!
