Gear legs and brakes

Postby lstinthot » Tue May 22, 2018 6:06 pm

I am getting ready to order some brakes. I am considering ordering the Tracy O'brian gear legs with axles along with the C-90 brakes. This drives me into 5" wheels and larger tires. Does anyone know weight penalty over the titanium gear leg set up? I have the titanium legs, have not made the axles yet. Are the Tracy O'Brian legs worth the extra weight and expense?

Thanks

Mike,

If you already have titanium gear legs, you might consider just staying with them. The Sonex brakes are cost effective and work fine (with a bit of tinkering to get the installation just right). You could also go with Great Plains brakes (now sold by O’Keefe Aero). They are easy to adapt to the standard Sonex axles and work with the same Azusa wheels, and I love mine. Total cost to upgrade to GP's is about $450. Either of those options is significantly less expensive than new TOB gear legs and brakes, and all will perform well once installed correctly.

SonexFlight Episode 14 also details many options and considerations for brakes, and if you haven't already listened to that podcast you might consider giving it a listen.
