Is it necessary to remove the control surfaces before painting. Has anyone painted their plane with them on?
Thanks.

For what it's worth, I wasn't the original builder or painter of my Waiex, but I know that the control surfaces were not removed prior to painting the plane.

I could be wrong, but if I remember correctly Jeremy told me that the Sonex's factory planes were painted with tail and wings attached , don't know about the control surfaces.

It may not be necessary to remove the controls for painting but I bet you'll ultimately get a much better paint job if you do. For the amount of time it takes to remove them, you can then prep and paint the spar channels and all sides of the surfaces much easier.

Also remember the ailerons are counter weighted so you may have to rebalance them after paint to avoid the chance of flutter.

Ultimately though, I'm sure it can be done either way. Good luck!
