Does anyone know who this "interesting" looking Sonex belongs to or what's up with all the cowl blisters?

The very early sonex cowlings had blisters on the side like that. Take a look at the news archive footage on the sonex website for June 23 1999. I think the exhaust used to come straight back instead of turning down at the end like it does now. Not sure on what is up with the blister on top of the cowl. It looks like it may be in the same location as the original VW oil cooler would be.

The top blister looks more like where the Dizzy would be on a stock VW.

some of the vw conversions used a magneto that used the distributor drive on the top front of the engine. Great Plains had such an option for their conversions. I suspect the top blister is to accommodate that conversion with a magneto up front
