I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I view the following questions with a sort of love/hate relationship. As I spend many hundreds of hours drilling, deburring, riveting, sanding and polishing, I can't help but dream about the days ahead when all of the tedious responsibilities of building will be behind me, and a completed airplane is sitting in the hangar, waiting to be flown whenever I choose. As I continue my project, I slowly but surely complete lots of small milestones that I can call progress. You all know what I mean...such goals as finishing a control surface, or maybe a wing, or maybe when your airplane finally sits on its own landing gear. (I always love those small victories! ;) )

Now that my Waiex is about ready to leave one nest for another (garage to hangar), I figure it's about time to start the paperwork battle that comes with creating your own airplane. I already have an N number reserved, and need to start the registration process shortly. In the meantime, I wanted to ask the already-flying members of the group here what everyone has discovered for their aircraft insurance. I love asking this question because I feel that distant light at the end of the tunnel is slowly getting brighter, but I hate asking this question because I've already spent enough money on this project, and don't want to think about spending more!! :mrgreen:

Anyway, if anyone would be willing to share, I'm interested in:

- What insurance company/insurance agent you've had good luck with

- What your aircraft is insured for (hull value, liability, etc.)

- Annual premiums

- Blanket pilot qualifications

-Taildragger time needed (if appropriate)

-Anything else you're willing to share.

Mike, when I get home I'll find the numbers but what I suggest is to get your registration NOW. It's free (I think) and easy. I actually know builders that have had to wait to fly because they did not have the registration certificate! I hade mine in hand two years before the first flight.

Keep in mind this will get the ball rolling if your state cross checks registrations and taxes paid so you'll have to deal with that...

My insurance is through Chartis...liability only $370/yr. Hull insurance non moving would be about double that. Full coverage for flight is around $1100/yr.
