Another two cents worth. I have a GRT EFIS. to which I have also added autopilot. The autopilot is unnecessary if just local fun flying, but turns a neutral stability Sonex that you have to FLY at all times into more comfortable cross country machine where you can sit back and watch the scenery and for traffic. Sonex do bounce around with air currents when not above the cloud level and I would not want to be fiddling with a small smart phone touch screen in that situation. The EFIS has actual buttons and knobs. Moving map display with ABS-B IN also aids in watching for traffic. That also adds access to in flight information for destination and airports in route as well and weather reports and radar. The various EFIS split screen modes that combine map, flight instruments and engine monitor are quite practical on my 8.5" display. I think GRT also offers a backup battery. I do have an separate airspeed indicator, and recommend using that when landing as the electronic digital displays do not update as fast as a Sonex can change speed. I also have a home built Lift reserve indicator info for which can be found in many places, a simple non sensitive backup altimeter and a good quality auto compass.
I learned to fly back when even steam gauges were pretty limited, (1 st was a non electric Luscombe 8A ) but the conversion to the EFIS was very quick and after a few minutes with that would never go back.
An EFIS allows installing and seeing display of all CHTs and EGTs at one time which steam gauges cannot do, can track record those over time, and offer better info for leaning, especially if running over peak. Additional monitoring functions can be added without revising panel.
