I don't think it matters. The general rule of thumb is front to back or top to bottom, but that's not always possible, for the A-model main spar bolts in particular. I actually didn't have clearance on my bolts from the side fuselage to do it either way, or at least attaching a nut on the forward side would have been difficult at best, which is why I went with hitch pins (inserted from the rear.)

If you reference the Sonex wing installation/removal procedures, you can see they also use hitch pins inserted from the rear (step 5 of this instruction sheet): https://www.sonexaircraft.com/documents ... nstall.pdf

Don't assume AN hardware has had all the quality checks you would think it would have.

I checked the AN8-43 bolts for my Xenos wing spar, fresh out of the package. One has a nick in it that is cad plated so it happened during mfg. It is about 1/2" from the threads. Fortunately, I bought four so I can get two good ones in the plane.

Years ago when I was working as an A&P for Eastern Caribbean Airways, I stocked a shipment of hardware we received and a box full of nuts didn't have any threads!
