If you drill from the "ugly" side your bit will take the path of least resistance and locate the hole. Just don't clamp down the piece, let it have some play until the bit locates the hole.

That is part of what I was wondering, thanks David. I am planning on having my son do one of the hockey sticks and I think I will give him the drill press and I will freehand the other one.
