I had recently hit a patch of ongoing frustrations on my build. It got to the point last week when I was resolved to quit; it was just too much and no longer much fun. I was considering beginning an RV-12 kit instead. The all-match drilled, no fabrication construction seemed just what I wanted. And if I'm going to quit, now would be the time, before I get an obscene amount of money invested in the Sonex.
I didn't want to make a snap decision, so I just continued researching the RV, and sat on the decision for several days. In the end, I decided to stick with the Sonex build. One reason is the amount of time already invested; I have about 600 hours logged, but actual time is probably closer to 700. Also, I really like the extra margin of safety in having a +6/-3g airframe, instead of the +4/-2 RV.
Performance was also a big factor. The Sonex is, no kidding, 30mph faster. It also has a 5-7mph slower stall speed. And even though the RV has a 180-220lb greater gross weight, the useful load is pretty close.
I almost didn't post anything about this (still not sure I will hit the 'post' button). But I'm hoping that once the fuselage is done, I'll find the wings to be easier, or at least less frustrating. And I also hope that my 'gut check' moment, when I had to decide what to do, can help others having difficulty.
I'm now back to "all in" on my Sonex build and excited to continue. 8-)
