I almost gave up

Postby Andy Walker » Thu May 17, 2012 9:21 pm

I had recently hit a patch of ongoing frustrations on my build. It got to the point last week when I was resolved to quit; it was just too much and no longer much fun. I was considering beginning an RV-12 kit instead. The all-match drilled, no fabrication construction seemed just what I wanted. And if I'm going to quit, now would be the time, before I get an obscene amount of money invested in the Sonex.

I didn't want to make a snap decision, so I just continued researching the RV, and sat on the decision for several days. In the end, I decided to stick with the Sonex build. One reason is the amount of time already invested; I have about 600 hours logged, but actual time is probably closer to 700. Also, I really like the extra margin of safety in having a +6/-3g airframe, instead of the +4/-2 RV.

Performance was also a big factor. The Sonex is, no kidding, 30mph faster. It also has a 5-7mph slower stall speed. And even though the RV has a 180-220lb greater gross weight, the useful load is pretty close.

I almost didn't post anything about this (still not sure I will hit the 'post' button). But I'm hoping that once the fuselage is done, I'll find the wings to be easier, or at least less frustrating. And I also hope that my 'gut check' moment, when I had to decide what to do, can help others having difficulty.

I'm now back to "all in" on my Sonex build and excited to continue. 8-)

Hey Andy,

First off, thank you for taking the time to write your story thus far. I'm sure you know this but most of us had moments during our own builds where we felt just like you. Make no mistake about it...building something as complex as an airplane is an unforgiving, complex thing that isn't easy to finish.

I also think that you should stick it out and get the fuselage finished. That will be a huge motivator to keep going, and I also think you'll find the wings to be easier to build than the fuselage. Once the wings are done, you will be almost done at that point!

Just keep at it and continue to make steady progress...you're halfway done! keep it up!!

Thanks Mike...I think You are right; finishing the fuse will be a huge step. I'm actually much more excited and motivated than I have been in a while! :)

I'm glad to hear that Andy. I remember the one phase of my project where I sort of got burned out was after I built the tail and was 75% done with my wings...I got so tired of deburring I just took a break for a while. Then I went to Oshkosh, saw all the completed examples flying, and dove right back into the project!

Maybe that's something to consider...are there any completed examples in your neck of the woods to look at or get a ride in? Maybe you can make it to Oshkosh a few days this summer as well! :)

Any project is going to have those points where you feel like you're spinning your wheels or going
backwards. A few years back I built a Titan Tornado and there were times I was a little burned out
on it. I owned a Sonex for a couple years .. that I didn't build. I loved the airplane though and made
up my mind I'd build one myself. Now I'm waiting on the airframe and engine kits to arrive. I'm sure
there will be times I'll get frustrated with it. My motivation will be having another Sonex to fly.

RV12's are very nice planes ... but not for twice the money.

Andy, if you ever reach that amount of "low" again, give me a call. I can come to the shop to help clear a plateau or at the very least take you up for an incentive ride!

I'm sure I'll need the same with my Pitts...soon... :o

Hey Kipp, that offer good for Colorado too?
I've stepped away from building for two months. The weathers finally good and I'm spending too much time working on the cars and hiking with the dogs.
I need someone to come kick some enthusiasm back into plane building.
