No light required in the tail, just the tips.

You still need a white light facing aft. The modern tip lights each have an aft facing light so you get the required coverage from any angle.

The anti-collision strobe lights need to be visible 360 degrees around the aircraft. You can do this by either having one strobe mounted on top of the tail or you can have two strobes (one on each wing). What you need to keep in mind though when mounting on the wing is that it still needs to be visible from above the aircraft With the sloped wing tips of a sonex you either need to mount them really high on the wing tip or make a set of fairings that extend the lights out past the edge of the wing.

With my Waiex there was some confusion with the FAA inspector as to where I was going to put the one light on the tail. I did have to point out that my position lights on the wings both had the white lights facing the rear as well as having strobes in them. It took awhile before he finally agreed with me that they satisfied the requirement. I was surprised that there should be any confusion with an FAA inspector. It seems there is always something for each of us to learn, that's why we ask the questions.
