Acceptable edge distance

Postby Area 51% » Sat Jun 25, 2016 7:27 am

Clecoed the stabilators to the Y-fitting and have the hockey sticks resting on the longerons. The attaching angle that will ultimately connect the "sticks" together, and hold them down to the longerons, came pre-pilot drilled in the machined angle kit. When clamped to the hockey sticks and centered, the 1/4in. bolts that holds everything down, will have only 1/8in. from the edge of the hole to the inside edge of the longeron.
Is this an acceptable edge to hole distance, or should I consider remaking the angle with the hole spacing wider?
I am in posession of the Aircraft Standard Handbook, but can't seem to find any info on the matter.

I remade mine, I think because I had forgotten to open or close the angle. My new part had as much edge distance as practical and I was happier with it.

Bryan,
Can you please explain why you and Ryan used a shim between the hockey sticks and that angle?
Thanks, Randy.

I guess I might be worrying about the wrong edge distance. Since the longeron is basically a flange/washer between the upper and lower angles, a tear-out issue probably doesn't exist. I do, however, need to take a closer look at the hole location on the lower angle.
Thanks for the clarity.
