Ah, I remember what you're talking about. Maybe check out my post on this, as I was able to reassemble it with everything in place you describe when I had to swap out the tail-post due to an aluminum recall notice that affected my particular kit.

It wasn't easy, but putting a strong magnet on the bolt head can aid in holding washers/bolts onto the threaded side as you stack things up. If I recall, for those nuts in particular, I used a universal joint (with the nut inserted in the socket smeared with some grease to keep it in place) at the end of several ratchet extensions and came at it from the bottom.
