Woo, hoo! Congratulations! Now the building withdrawals begin, as do the flight anxieties ;) You're going to have a blast!

Re: Compression Ratio Calcs

Mike, I double checked your math and it seems correct, but I'm pretty sure you are aiming for the wrong compression ratio. Should be 8.0:1. Seems like your original settings were pretty close to correct. Why is your deck height so far outside Sonex's table now? Are you using different pistons? Yes ...

Compression Ratio Calcs

I'm rebuilding my AV 2.1. This time I decided to measured the actual CC's of the heads, and so have been calculating the barrel shims necessary to get the 8.5:1 ratio for av gas. When I built the engine the first time I had 2 shims on each barrel: a .045 and a .060 (that's what they measure with a m...

Re: Insurance

I needed 5 hours of dual, and another 15 hours in a tail dragger. Just over $1,600/year for $35K of hull + liability.

Re: Strike two :(

4 - torque it I would suggest you not torque the plugs. Just seat them firmly. I used the torque values at first and found them way too high for these heads AND for the plugs themselves. I actually snapped the head off a plug (so the threaded end was left in the engine head) before I got to the pro...

Re: Brake bleeder upside down?

I retrofitted the brakes onto my Sonex, and the bleeder is at the top. It's worked fine with no problems.

Re: Look what I found!

So now two people have said that a spare screen assembly is a good idea. Under what conditions would the original screen assembly be damaged and need to be replaced? Seems to me it should be pretty safe once installed in the sump. Excepting any rivet (quality control, actually) failures :) The scre...

Re: Look what I found!

Note this is a s.s. machine screw and all metal lock nut. I see no problem with this, but if anyone has any concerns, pipe up! Thanks! Well, I think Sonex owes you a new screen. It can't hurt to have an extra. It's pretty easy to crush or damage that screen. Glad you found the simple answer to the ...

Re: Look what I found!

I just happen to have my AeroVee completely disassembled, so I just went and took a look. The cam gear is held on with 3 bolts; no rivets. But that piece REALLY looks like the single rivet that attaches the sump screen assembly, as you guessed. Since you've already drained the oil, drop out the scre...
