I got a new GoPro 11, and I hadn't used my wing-mount camera in quite a while so I put up a video on YouTube.

Re: EGT Probe Location

There is an excellent article in the January 2023 AOPA Pilot magazine (page 93), about EGT, CHT and leaning. Engine manufacturers' max temperatures vary, but the chemistry and math behind combustion are the same no matter what engine you are running.

Re: Wheel landings and (lack of) shimmy

I did 3 point landings for the first year I flew my Sonex. But with such a low lift-off speed (37 kts indicated), if I had any excess speed at all, I'd get airborne again as the tail came down. So for the last 7 years I have been doing wheel landings. I reserve 3-point landings for practice and gras...

Re: Where are the instructions?

As someone who scratch-built a Sonex, and is currently building an RV-7, I can say one thing about the Sonex plans. The best in the business! No dig on Vans, but their plans are hard to follow for the small details, and I find it odd that some critical information is buried in the "instructions...

Re: "Sight" Fuel Gauges

I love having a sight gauge. I have it calibrated in RED for 3-point (on the ground) calibration, and in BLUE for level flight. My sight tube disappears through the bottom of the panel, and is at a bit less than 5 gal when the liquid is no longer visible. The fuel tank has blue Sharpie lines on it f...

Re: EGT Probe Location

Hopefully you can learn from my mistake. I dutifully measured 4", and installed the probes. Later, when I fit the cowl, I found that the locations on #2 and #4 interfered (hugely) with the inside of the cowl. I had to bend them nearly 90 deg, and even then they still rub. And when I bent the fi...

Re: fuel line insulation

Red firesleeve does the job nicely. Take care you do not select a dimension that fits too tightly over the fuel line: a loose fit that does not have to be massaged over the line is good. And make sure you seal off both ends of the sleeve. To keep the fire sleeve from soaking up oil or fuel, use red...

Re: Re-torquing heads

Mike, I always appreciate you sharing your Aerovee experience. Thanks! I made covers for those access holes I added to the baffles, for the top aft nuts. You can see a #6 screw, with a rivet tail next to it. An aluminum pop rivet holds the cover off to the side and it pivots on that rivet. Clever!!

Re: Builders web sites?

I scratch built, but still lots of useful information (I think) on my site: http://www.mykitlog.com/users/index.php?user=mikesmith&project=698 Make sure you're looking at the Sonex project. I have an RV-7 going on there, too. Welcome, good luck, and don't be afraid to ask lots of questions of th...
