Re: Siezed low-time neglected turbocharger

One comment, one concern. Start with the comment: For those who claim other companies make you pay for SB services and parts, that’s not always the case. I know this for a fact. My hangar buddy is completing his RV-7A project. He’s got a brand new Lycoming engine that has not run yet. Perhaps some o...

Re: Siezed low-time neglected turbocharger

If you’re going to go to a water cooling system on a VW engine to cool the turbo, you might as well go all out and do this as well: https://s13.postimg.org/6t0syhxmv/bing_side_draft.png http://www.greatplainsas.com/lceng.jpeg (this was a Great Plains experiment, liquid cooled heads) But seriously, I...

Re: Change to Prince Prop

I have to second everybody praising the Lonnie Prince’s props, I have a 54x48 P-Tip on my VW powered Sonex and absolutely love it. At first I thought the great performance I was getting from my VW engine was mostly related to the fact that I have a slightly higher displacement engine than most (94mm...

Re: Unauthorized X-plane?

You could take a set of A model blueprints to a sheet metal shop and do the same thing. Just the pictures he posted here on the forum would not be enough for any shop to make the parts. There is nothing keeping you from doing the same thing as long as it is for your own use and you are not selling ...

Re: Unauthorized X-plane?

The thing is, with what he has appeared to have done, one could buy the required aluminum and steel, take it to a machine shop or some manufacturer with the required tools, along with the digital drawings he made and have them make you a near complete Sonex kit with matchted hole technology and ever...

Re: Modern Engines & Ignition Systems

I have a Bendix D2000 dual magneto directly driven from the crankshaft on the back of my VW: http://www.kitlog.com/photos/project_1898/full/FP06072014A0003K.jpg http://www.kitlog.com/photos/project_1898/full/FP06072014A0003L.jpg http://www.kitlog.com/photos/project_1898/full/FP06072014A0003J.jpg The...

Re: Oil Cooler Structural Failure

90 PSI is very high,
I think I get mid 60’s to low 70’s cold and mid 30’s hot.
Definetly check the pressure relief pistons, they can get stuck and if you find it is, GP has instructions on their website somewhere to get it out.

Re: pre-built spars

Are they worth the extra $2700.00? I see a lot of 'precision' hammering going on with the home-built version. Is this instead of regular rivet upsetting, or is there another reason for the bolt/hammer procedure? What have others done? Pluses/negatives? I scratch built my plane, including the spars....

Re: Siezed low-time neglected turbocharger

It's that confidence thing that's nagging me, nothing else really, not at this point. Yep, and it keeps nagging me. My 2.4L VW is not an AeroVee and it has never skipped a beat. Runs like a champion. However, I don't trust it the way I trusted the Lycomings I used to fly behind. I never hesitated f...

Re: Crazy EGTs

Check your air filter as well, I had high EGTs on one side after replacing the air filter on my aerocarb. It must have been a torn or something causing the air to swirl unevenly in the manifold and favouring one side over the other.
